Type Composition with the Camera.
For five hundred years, from black-letter to
Beton, type and metal have been inseparable, but
the Uhertype system of type composition has suc
ceeded in dispensing with metal, and has sub
stituted for it the camera and its resources.
The principle of the photographic type-composing
machine may be said to be the use of a master film
of the alphabet from which a hand photo-composing
machine sets the required characters, which are
then assembled on the Metteurapparatus.
This latter machine can enlarge or reduce the type,
and it is possible to introduce many unusual effects,
such as areas of pattern, lines set at angles, reverse
lettering, and so on. The final product may be a
positive or a negative, and naturally the method of
reproduction is offset or photogravure.
The examples reproduced here are from a most
excellent specimen recently published by Uhertype,
which offers a convincing display of the advantages
of this process. We are by now accustomed to the
uniform high quality of continental type specimens,
and this clean-looking spiral-bound job, the work
of the Hungarian Imre Reiner (who was responsible
for Corvinus) is no exception. Jan asymmetrical
form Tschichold has designed the three alpha
bets which are as yet available, Grotesk, Antiqua
and Ramses.
It comes as something of a shock to find an
English type form the basis of a new continental
letter, but to one observer at least, Grotesk medium
is but a short step from our own tried and trusted
Gill Sans. Ramses is an adequate Egyptian, with
too much emphasis upon rectangular formation,
and the Antiqua is a Roman of sound but unin
spired design.
The manifold possibilities offered by the com
bination of these three types and of the various
rules and patterns obtainable by the method of
the virile temperament of the man. In a breathless string o( wore A
