ANTONICLAVÉ m B i retrospective exhibition: «Antoni Clavé - 25 Years of Pictorial Art.» This probably was the first exhibition of a master of pic torial art which also included his film post ers. These film posters, strikingly novel as they were at that time, aroused the interest of the editor of the Gebrauchsgraphik when he travelled through Spain 25 years ago. As a consequence Gebrauchsgraphik was the first art magazine to publicize the talent of the young Spaniard who was still totally unknown in 1935 and who today is one of the few painters and graphic artists of the younger generation to have gained a permanent place in the history of art along with the old masters of the École de Paris, such as Picasso, Braque, Rouault, Matisse, Léger and Chagall. Thus the «Gebrauchs graphik» can celebrate today the 25th an niversary of its aquaintance and close relationship, its steadfast friendship with Antoni Clavé. When in 1935 we published the first article on Clavé, he had but recently begun his artistic work and research in the field of graphic film advertising. Antoni Clavé, born on April 5, 1913, at the age of 13 had started out as a house-painter and sign-painter. But already at that time the little fellow wanted to be an artist and soon he attended the night-classes of the Art Acad emy of his city. Since he could not yet make a living as a painter, he illustrated cheap pa per-back editions for children until he made a name for himself in Barcelona as a much sought-after and distinguished draftsman for film-posters. In 1929 Antoni Clavé went to Southern France and in 1941 to Paris. Litho graph illustrations of bibliophile editions netted him his first success there. As a reno vator of stage-setting and ballet and opera costumes his fame rapidly spread all over the world. Clavé consequently became the lion of the mondaine circles of Paris. After the death of Christian Bérard who had greatly esteemed Clavé, the latter could easily have succeeded him in the role of the arbiter of taste of Paris. But the young Spaniard, obsessed by his artistic mission, refused to be sucked into the tempting «Dolce Vita.» He only lived to develop his pictorial art. And thus Antoni Clavé, who certainly has not yet reached the summit of his art, can even now be proud of his work which distinguishes him as a young master of the École de Paris and at the same time as a worthy descendant of the great Spanish Masters.
