years with Bauer's Type Foundry Leu already had gathered big enough
a store of good and interesting designs to enable him to open an exhibi
tion of his own work in 1956. He did not, however, content himself with
being a typographer but aimed at the career of a commercial artist. As
an assistant to Art Director Christian K. Minzlaff of Hanns W. Brose's
advertising agency he made himself familiar with all aspects of adver
tising. He was not spared anything but went through everything: basic
concepts of advertising, problems of organisation, how to handle free
collaborators and even accounting. It was a very thorough preparation
for his later career as a free lance graphic artist. After two and a half
years with this agency Leu believed to have learned enough and decided
to return to creative designing. After a short time as a magazine lay-
outer he opened his own studio in January 1959. In the two years since,
