dick elffers was born in Rotterdam in 1910. He studied there at the Academy of Art and
now lives and works in Amsterdam. Wide attention was drawn to his work through his posters
for the exhibitions 'In Defence of Democracy' and 'Expressionist Painters', held shortly after the
liberation of Holland. His close co-operation in design and typography with the printers, Meijer
of Wormerveer, has now reached its culmination in the brilliant annual series of booklets which
he designs and they print for the Holland Festival. He is a member of AGI. Editor

und arbeitet jetzt in Amsterdam. Seine Plakate für die Ausstellungen »Verteidigung der Demo-
kratie« und «Expressionistische Malerdie kurz nach der Befreiung Hollands durchgeführt
wurden, machten ihn bekannt. Die enge Zusammenarbeit mit seinem Drucker, Meijer in Wormer
veer, hat ihren Höhepunkt in den Prospekten erreicht, die sie für das Holland-Festival herausgeben.

avant de s'établir a Amsterdam. Ses affiches pour les expositions «Défense de la démocratie» et
«Peintres expressionnistes», organisées peu après la libération des Pays-Bas, le rendirent célèbre.
L'étroite collaboration d'Elffers avec son imprimeur, Meijer a Wormeveer, a atteint son point
culminant dans la brillante série de prospectus pour le Festival de Hollande. Elffers est membre de

The art and work of Dick Elffers can be best understood against the
background of 'Europa 1907', that remarkable Exhibition held
recently in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. The worth of the work
of artists of that year who were to shape the art of the coming fifty
years brought many individual surprises to the spectators of 1957, but
one conclusion stood out sharper than anything else: Expressionism was
the most 'audible' group-expression in Europe half a century ago.
Munch, Rouault, Kokoschka, Ensor, Nolde, Kandinsky and Kirchner
were all up in arms against society. They gave visual projection to
