BwtaJP Jean Lur^at Jean Lur^at, born in Bruyères (Vosges) in 1892, gave up the study of medicine in 1912 to become a painter. From 1917 onwards he turned his attention to the tapestry also, becoming the champion of modern aesthetic and economic principles in tapestry weaving and reviving tapestry art in general and the French tapestry in particular. Under his guidance the weaving establishments of Aubusson have risen from stag nation to a new florescence. His most ambitious work, Le Chant du Monde, parts of which are shown here, was first exhibited in Paris in 1964, then in Lausanne in Spring 1967. Lurgat died on 6th January 1966. He began the cyi. in 19/7, while still at the height of his powers as an artist and his skill as a craft man. It was to have included more than ten tapestries, had death not intervene, and when Turgat died on 6th fanuary 1966, it became his spiritual bequest: warning and a prophecy. The first and more dramatic part of the cycle consists of four tapestries entitli Ha Grande Menace'H'Homme d'Hiroshima'Le Grand Charnier' at. Ha Fin de Tout'They depict the threat of the atom bomb to the world and t, terrors of its destructive force. The following part, today comprising six tapestrk sings the beauty of the earth, the harmony of man and nature, the manifold varies of things, the talents and the friendships of man and the many blessings to whu they hold the key. fean Turgat was able to draw the cartoon for the last tapestr entitled'Ornamentos Sagrados' (see page 19), but it was not granted to him 1 see the finished work. It was completed a month after his death. The text whil accompanies the selection from the cycle of tapestries reproduced here is the artist own commentary on it, in which he talks of the origin and meaning of his work. C.l It is courteous, and certainly no empty gesture, to explain oneself f one's public from time to time. The painter, like the writer, may we; find it an advantage to add a preface to his work. For a work of art, whether one admits it or not, is really a dialogue The artist in any exhibition (or exposition if you will, for he expose himself) is offering you his hand, is throwing you a rope. It would f risking everything to put on airs, which in any case is small-minded.
