The selection of the 'best Swiss posters of the year' under the aegis of the Swiss Department of the Interior is a classic example of how authorities can encourage good design. In the following survey of Swiss posters produced in 1970, we have marked with an asterisk those that received an official award. Our author represented the designers' association VSG on the jury. La redaction Just as the Swiss public tends to take an interest in the development of graphic design, the designers themselves have a latent propensity for stock-taking and self-orientation. From this point of view there is logic in the yearly round of recognition accorded by the Federal Depart ment of the Interior to the best posters to have appeared in the course of the previous twelve months. Advertisers, designers and printers expec tantly await the list of 25-30 posters which are found worthy, each spring, to receive the official award. And the public follows the pro ceedings with a hardly less attentive eye. The jury, elected for a four-year period, is composed of a represen tative of the Swiss home office, who acts as chairman, and delegates of the General Poster Company and the leading design and advertising associations (Werkbund, Oeuvre, Verband Schweizerischer Graphiker, Bund Graphischer Gestalter, Schweizerischer Reklameverband, Fédé- ration romande de publicité, Verein Schweizerischer Lithographie- besitzer). Of the total production for 1970, numbering 591 posters, 26 were selected as 'the best posters of the year'. Two of them were triple posters, one was double. The choice has become more difficult than in earlier years becausewith the exception of a single 'master', Herbert Leupinthe big individual poster artists have today vanished. Leupin's work was honoured by the choice of two of his designs. On the whole there was good agreement between the four French Swiss and five German Swiss in the jury as to the criteria to be applied, and the selection made may therefore be regarded as representing a homo geneous judgement.
