The department believes that it is the understanding of context which determines the contemporary relevance of practice, but also recognizes that being an artist is itself determined by individual orientation. The department of concerns itself with those aspects of visual culture which are created in the context of commissions. The emphasis is on the practice and theory of visual communication, including the pro duction, distribution and compre-u) hension of visual information as well'^ as its cultural implications.
